Vine Cooperative

4Additional program details

History Integration:

During the history component homeroom teachers go deeper into history utilizing the following tools:

  1. Historical literature and Socratic discussion during class (The oldest students may read a chapter book at home and discuss it in class.)
  2. Timeline discussion and integration with geography

PreK & Oldest Class:

The preschool and 5th/6th-grade classes are more tailored to meet the particular academic needs of those ages. The preschool class may not participate in the science rotation but instead may have more homeroom time, playground time, and age-appropriate activities.

ArtOur program includes both skill instruction and art or music appreciation. During an art year, it includes some multi-week projects building on skills learned with a focus on drawing and painting and may include other mediums.  During a music year, it includes showcasing instruments, learning to read notes, and music appreciation.

Science: Our community loves learning science together using the Apologia Exploring Creation series. Class time includes discussion and hands-on experiments. We have at least three science rotations so that the class can be modified according to the abilities of older students and younger students.

Community Policies

Parental Involvement:

Parents are required to attend Vine with their student(s) each week. This facilitates joint parent/student learning, is necessary to operate our community day, and fosters a well-shepherded classroom.*

Classroom Participation:

Parents who are not teaching or assisting art or science should stay in the classroom to participate with their child and serve the teacher by helping whenever needed. Moms of multiple students have discretion to go where they are most needed.

Uniform Policy:

Navy or white collared shirts with khaki, navy, or jeans on the bottom. Solid navy or khaki dresses as well. Plaids with navy or blue, white or green are also an option for shorts, jumpers, or skirts. Sneakers or comfortable shoes are recommended. (Uniform swap box available)

* A drop-off option is available for Bridge in which one visit per semester is required by a parent.

Miscellaneous

Volunteers:

This is an all-hands-on-deck community! We depend upon our volunteers to keep costs low and make Vine happen. There are a variety of tasks in which parents in varying seasons and with different capacities and talents can serve as well as tasks that are only completed once a year. Many hands make light work! Some volunteer positions include family history day assistant, coffee coordinator, yearbook, photographer, pizza day coordinator, and field trip coordinator.

Field Trips:

During the year, moms plan field trips to places in and around Austin, usually on Thursdays or Fridays.
Events: Throughout the year we have community events such as History Day and the Art and Science Expo.
